Product Questions

How reliable are satellite phones?

Iridium is a military grade network, used by both the Canadian and US armies. The Iridium network consists of 66 Low Earth Orbiting satellites (to compare, GlobalStar has 18 satellites, Inmarsat has 3, Thuraya has 2). The Iridium network is considered to be 98% reliable.

Does the phone / service provide "WiFi hot spot" to enable other devices to connect to such as a tablet to get to the internet (data) for emails. if not is there a model that can do that.

The Iridium 9555 has voice and text capabilities, but not data. A popular mobile data option is the Inmarsat Isavi, which offers 3G data speeds, which will allow you to surf the web and check emails.

What are the primary differences between the Extreme handset vs. the 9555 handset?

The 9575 is smaller, lighter and has been designed to military grade specifications for durability. This phone also provides a GPS component which can be integrated with an LBS portal for online tracking and monitoring. The most noticeable difference is the Programmable SOS Button. This red button is located on the top of the phone, under a protective cover. By removing the cover and pressing the red button you can send your location information to your designated contact in the event of an emergency.
